Community Announcement: National Phone Alert Test – Sunday 7th September 2025

On Sunday 7th September 2025, at around 3pm, the UK Government will be running a nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts system.

What will happen?

  • All 4G and 5G mobile phones and tablets will receive an alert.
  • Your device will vibrate, make a loud siren-like sound, and show a message on screen – even if it’s on silent.
  • The message will state clearly that it is only a test. No action will be required.

Why is this happening?

The Emergency Alerts system is designed to warn people if there is a life-threatening emergency nearby (such as severe flooding, fires, or extreme weather). The test ensures the system works across the UK.

Important notes

  • Drivers: Do not touch your phone if the alert sounds while you’re on the road – it is illegal to use your phone while driving.
  • The alert is not a scam or a real emergency – it is a controlled government test.
  • No personal data is collected; the system simply broadcasts to all devices in range.

Clearing up Misconceptions

Some online posts have suggested these types of alerts are linked to tracking, surveillance, or are health affecting. This is not true. The system cannot access your personal data, record your conversations, or install anything on your phone. It works in the same way as a radio broadcast – one-way only – to warn people quickly in an emergency.

Example message you’ll see

“This is a test of Emergency Alerts, a UK government service that will warn you if there’s a life-threatening emergency nearby. You do not need to take any action. In a real emergency, follow the instructions in the alert to keep yourself and others safe. Visit gov.uk/alerts for more information.”

✅ Please share this with neighbours, friends, and family – especially those who may be alarmed if their phone suddenly makes the siren sound.
